Econ C’tee recommends mining freeze at Samar sand dunes

The desert is home to animals whose genetic makeups are closer to their counterparts in Mali and Mauritania than to animals in nearby areas in Israel, according to Dr. Uri Shanes, senior lecturer in the Biology and Environment department at the University of Haifa and a long-time researcher of the sands.Only 2.3 square kilometers of the original 11 sq.-km. plot currently remain, Shanes told the committee, according to the statement.

A parallel between Muslims in Israel and the Haredi population

Dr. Dan Schueftan - director of the National Security Studies Center at Haifa University - says it’s not economic discrimination that causes extremism among Israeli Arabs. Dr. Schueftan also draws a parallel between Muslims in Israel and the Haredi population here.

Indonesia’s Jews

To commemorate the largely untold story of this community and its vanishing heritage, we convened a two-day conference at the University of Haifa in late December 2010. The majority of the articles included here are an outcome of this conference. Rotem Kowner presents what is possibly the first attempt to recount the pre-war history of the community from the arrival of the first recorded Jew to its peak in the 1930s, while Ronit Ricci explores the image of Jews in Indonesia from early times to the present.

Asking the Palestinian Authority to recognize Israel as a Jewish state

Dr. Dan Schueftan is asked in a radio interview about how the Palestinian Authority is relating to being asked to recognize Israel as a Jewish state. “The Arabs in Israel addressed the PLO and they say ‘You’re the PLO. If you’re considering accepting Israel as a Jewish State, remember we are very strongly against it’,” he explains.

Kaleidoscope of Child Maltreatment - international conference

The first international conference on the subject of “Kaleidoscope of Child Maltreatment” will take place from June 26-28, 2011, at the University of Haifa.

The goal of the conference is to raise public awareness of the complex issues related to child maltreatment, including the sheer volume of possible characteristics, reporting crimes, and providing counseling for the various types of abuse of children and youth. The conference further seeks to shrink the knowledge gaps in this field in order to create policy change and new ways of dealing with this dangerous trend. Continue Reading »

High asbestos levels in Nahariya linked to genetic mutation in rats

A Haifa University study suggests that asbestos exposure might have damaged DNA of descendant rats from areas near the spot where the Eitanit factory - Israel’s only asbestos producer - stood until it was shut down in 1997.
