The deep-sea reefs that surprised the scientists

When a team of Israeli marine researchers took off on a two and a half week voyage aboard the Exploration Vessel Nautilus, the robot-equipped research ship of Titanic discoverer Robert Ballard, they knew they were in for surprises, but they didn’t realize how big. . . “It’s like finding a flourishing oasis in the middle of the desert,” said Dr. Yizhaq Makovsky, who directed the University of Haifa control center for the project. “We did not expect, know, or even imagine that we would come across these reefs and certainly not such large ones.”

Back into the light

A just-released University of Haifa study on the effects of the Gozansky law at the conclusion of its first decade found that the efficacy of the “basket of rehabilitation services” is high. “People with mental limitations who use these services have a higher quality of life and fewer symptoms,” wrote the researchers, who will publish their findings in the next issue of the Israel Journal of Psychiatry.

During a forum on ‘Changing role of the Caspian in terms of global energy’ held at the John Hopkins University in Washington on October 13, professor of the Haifa University, former chief of the Caspian research program under the Harvard University Brenda Scheffer said that the United States does not pay due attention to the resolution of the Karabakh conflict and pursues an imbalanced policy in the South Caucasus.

Sea sickness

What lies underneath the blue-green waters of the Mediterranean? That is being brought more and more to the public’s attention by undersea exploratory and “mapping” operations such as the recently completed one carried out from September 4 to 15 by the Nautilus Sea Research Foundation, composed of a group of American and Israeli oceanographers and marine geophysics.

THE ISRAELI team members were connected with the Moses Strauss Department of Marine Geosciences at the University of Haifa, headed by Prof. Zvi Ben Avraham. The project’s Control Center was headed by Dr. Yitzhak Mokovsky, head of the Geophysics Department and a specialist in marine geophysics dealing with the eastern Mediterranean.

New beginnings

3z6o7589Some 18,100 students began the new 2010/11 academic year at the University of Haifa today: 10,000 undergraduate students, 7,000 graduate students and 1,100 doctoral students. “The University of Haifa continues to grow and to welcome new students and faculty. After experiencing years of budget cuts in higher education, we are opening this year with a guaranteed budget for the coming years, as decided in discussions between the Ministry of Finance and the Planning and Budgeting Committee. An education in inequality

Regarding the gaps between Israel’s Jewish and Arab educational systems, Gabi Salomon, a professor of education at the University of Haifa and a co-director of Sikkuy, remarks: “I don’t think there is any sinister intention behind it.”

The neglect, Salomon explains, comes from considering Palestinian citizens of Israel “as a potential fifth column not to be trusted too much or counted too much”.
