The University of Haifa will be honoring Israeli entrepreneur, businessman and philanthropist Benny Landa, at the 40th Meeting of the Board of Governors (3-5 June, 2012). Landa will be receiving the honor in recognition of his extensive and ongoing philanthropic activities and in appreciation for his efforts promoting equal opportunities - with a focus on making higher education accessible to all youth.
Landa, who at age 30 founded Indigo (later sold to industry giant Hewlett-Packard), established the Landa Fund for Equal Opportunity through Education with his wife Patsy in 2002. The fund aims to enable underprivileged but talented youth to acquire a higher education. The Fund has thus far invested over NIS 200 million in Israel’s higher education system for this purpose.

President of the University of Haifa, Prof. Aaron Ben-Ze’ev, noted Landa’s important contribution to the educational system and to the growth and development of the State of Israel. “Benny Landa has given hundreds of students at the University of Haifa the opportunity to acquire a higher education and greatly improve their lives - ultimately improving Israeli society overall. Benny Landa is a true friend of the University of Haifa and he represents the best of Israeli society. For this we believe he is worthy of the highest honor that the University awards - the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Honoris Causa.”

Benny Landa was born in 1946 in Poland to parents who were Holocaust survivors. His family immigrated to Canada, where he grew up. He studied physics and engineering, followed by Fine Arts, in which he earned a degree in England, where he started working in the field of micrographics research. His first invention in this field earned him a contract with Rolls Royce. In 1970, Landa and a colleague founded Imtec, which later became the largest micrographics company in Europe.

After moving to Israel, Landa, at age 30, founded the high tech company, Indigo, which today, thirty five years later, is a division of the Hewlett-Packard Company (HP). Landa’s vision was to combine the benefits of printing ink with those of the computer in order to achieve, through electronic means, the beauty, brilliance, and quality of offset printing. Today, Indigo, with annual revenues of more than $1 billion, directly employs about 3,000 people in Israel and indirectly employs approximately another 10,000.

After selling Indigo, Landa founded the Landa Corporation, which is involved in the fields of nanotechnology, imaging and alternative energy. In addition, he set up Landa Ventures, which invests in promising Israeli technology start-up companies. He also created Landa Digital Printing, which in May of this year launched a new generation of digital printing presses, based upon “Nanography”.
