The University of Haifa’s Executive Committee has elected Amos Shapira as the University’s next president, to replace current President Prof. Aaron Ben-Ze’ev who is completing two terms in this position. The appointment will be brought to the University’s Board of Governors for its approval when the Board convenes at the beginning of June 2012.

At its meeting yesterday, the members of the Executive Committee approved the search committee’s recommendation to elect Shapira for the position. Shapira will take office in October 2012 with the opening of the 2012/13 academic year, and will in fact be coming full circle: He graduated the University of Haifa with a B.A. in Economics in the early 1980s and his first job was as teaching assistant in the Department of Economics. “I am proud to be returning to the University where I took my first steps and which gave me the crucial framework for success - both professionally and personally. Today the University of Haifa has given me the great privilege of contributing from my experience and abilities to the education and scholarship of the young generation, and I thank the members of the Executive Committee for their vote of confidence in me,” said Shapira.

Shapira also has an M.A. in Industrial Management from the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. He was managing director of Hogla-Kimberly (marketer of non-food, disposable consumer products in Israel), President of El Al and in his last post as CEO of Cellcom he turned the company into Israel’s leading cellular provider. Since 2008 Shapira has been serving as President of Tel Aviv University’s Friends Association (which he will be leaving upon taking office at the University of Haifa), where he spearheaded the “Employers’ Pact for Humanities and Natural Sciences” - a pact signed by 300 of Israel’s leading firms, promoting the employment of humanities and exact sciences graduates in the business sector. Over the past years, Shapira has also been active in increasing awareness amongst individuals who hold influence on public opinion regarding Israel’s academic “brain drain”.

“We are happy about the appointment and are confident that Amos Shapira will advance the University of Haifa towards its central goal: academic excellence. His proven management abilities and his passion for education and advanced scholarship are a recipe for success for us all,” said Chairman of the Executive Committee Ami Ayalon.
