University of Haifa to award five Doctor of Philosophy Honoris Causa degrees

The University of Haifa will award five Doctor of Philosophy honoris causa degrees to: Mrs. Lily Safra, Mr. Sami Michael, Mr. Harry Sessler, Mr. Ernst Fraenkel and Prof. Onno J. Boxma, in the course of the University’s 37th Meeting of the Board of Governors events. The degrees will be awarded at a festive event on June 2.

Philanthropist Mrs. Lily Safra, Chairperson of the Edmond J. Safra Foundation and Honorary Chairman of ISEF (International Sephardic Education Foundation), will receive the degree in recognition of her deep social commitment and her long-standing philanthropic activity fostering educational, health, cultural and welfare institutions in Israel and abroad; her support of medical research; and her contribution to the advancement of academic excellence and institutes of higher education in Israel, and of the University of Haifa in particular.

The Haifa-born author Mr. Sami Michael will receive the degree in recognition of his prolific literary contribution, which reflects the many faces of Israeli society with respect for mankind and its freedom; his public activity that consistently expresses deep commitment to peace, justice and civilian rights; and his contribution to the advancement of mutual understanding between the different denominations and between Jews and Arabs.

Mr. Harry Sessler, formerly Joint General Manager of Dagon Silos Ltd., will be awarded the degree in recognition of his long-standing activity on behalf of community welfare; assistance to the University of Haifa in establishing the Reuben and Edith Hecht Museum and the Dr. Hecht Arts Center; and advancing the Herzl Institute for Research of Zionism.

Mr. Ernst Fraenkel, Life President of the Wiener Library and Institute of Contemporary History in London, will receive the degree in recognition of his long-standing contribution to the advancement of research and education on the Holocaust; and his dedication to and philanthropic activity for the Jewish community in the UK and beyond.

Prof. Onno J. Boxma, Professor of Stochastic Operations Research at Eindhoven University of Technology, will receive the degree in recognition of his scientific and breakthrough contribution in the study of Applied Probability, and to Queueing theory in particular; his struggle against academic boycott on Israeli researchers and research institutions; his great support for Israel; and his friendship and support for the University of Haifa.
