Inheriting Stress

Adversity and enrichment at a young age can influence the next generation, according to psychologists at the University of Haifa. Prof. Micah Leshem headed the team along with Prof. Jay Schulkin of Georgetown University and postgraduate students Hiba Zaidan and Neta Kvetniy- Ferdman, They published their findings recently in the journal Developmental Psychobiology.

Heredity helps in coping with stress

A new study from the University of Haifa has indicated that rats exposed to stress during early development inherit the effects of that stress to their offspring, largely expressed in behaviour impairments but also characteristics of resilience.

Can UK riots spill over to Israel?

Professor Daniel Gottwein of the Haifa University claims there is a massive difference between the Israeli and British protest. “In Israel it’s a protest of the middle class which views itself as the pillar of society and is struggling for a social agenda,” he said. “In Britain, however, it is members of the lower classes and minorities who protest. They see themselves as society’s rebels and are therefore not part of the rules of the game.”

Walkabouts’ for the elderly shorten their hospital stays

If the health system wants to reduce the length of elderly patients’ hospitalization and save money, the simplest way to do so is by encouraging them to walk around the wards. This is the lesson of a new University of Haifa study that found such simple exercise significantly cut the number of days these patients stayed in the hospital.

Patients who walk around hospital ‘have stay cut by 36 hours’

HOSPITAL patients who get out of bed to walk around can cut their stay by three days.The benefit is ­regardless of the patients’ state of health and those who start strolling on their first day in hospital shorten their visits more than others, research shows. The University of Haifa team, studied nearly 500 patients over 70 in Israel.

Older hospital patients who get out of bed and walk round can reduce their stay by an average of 36 hours, according to research… The study, by the University of Haifa in Israel, surveyed 485 participants aged 70 and over who were patients in a hospital in Israel.

‘Rock rabbits’ becoming a pest in Israel

Hyraxes, sometimes knows as rock rabbits, are fuzzy, cute and, in Israel at least, becoming a serious pest in residential areas, scientists say. The animals have moved into neighborhoods of Galilee and have been destroying people’s gardens. “They’re coming into the villages and eating everything they can find,” University of Haifa researcher Arik Kershenbaum told the BBC.
